Simon Stone's (2016) Yerma, is a modern variation on the Federico García, Lorca's Yerma that was written in 1934 on the eve of the Spanish civil war.

Yerma is a play that explores the societal expectations of Women; when they get to a certain age they should start having children. The play shows an extreme reaction of what can happen to people if they are unable to have kids. Yerma explores the effects of a lack of purpose, infertility and motherhood have on a person and their relationships.  Creating life is one of the if not the main goals of a human life. The women's purpose in the process is carrying the fetus and then giving birth. The pressure builds and builds on 'Her' as she spends more and more time attempting to have kids which causes her to lose her grip on reality, pushing her towards a violent and destructive act - stabbing herself in the womb (symbolising her acceptance that she is the reason she cant have a child) , suicide.

The Characters include:

  • Her (the lead)
  •  John (husband)
  •  Mary (mum)
  • Victor (ex-boyfriend)
  • Des (journalist)
  • Helen (Her's sister)
